I have a Cub Cadet 1440. Yesterday I noticed that the tractor would go very slowly in reverse. Today the tractor started to go slowly in forward and reverse until it would not go in either direction at all. I added transmission fluid, 1/2 quart, and now the tractor goes in reverse but still not forward. What could be causing this? I have a snowblower attached and had just finished blowing the driveway. The slow reverse has been getting worse with time. I hope I can get this fixed before the next snow storm!

I'm guessing the tractor has HST and doesn't have something like load-match. I wonder if the ground speed increases at all when the speed pedal is increased and if the engine seems to be under increased throttle (I tell if throttle is being added by changes in the engine sound)?

I also wonder if the ground speed increases if engine RPM is increased while the speed pedal remains the same? Off-hand I'd guess a hydraulic problem--HST pump, motor or relief valve and not good news. From a comment to another discussion, the brakes might be checked to see if they're dragging. At least that would be a simple fix.

If it's a gear tractor, I'd guess clutch. However, in that case, the engine rpm should increase without an increase in ground speed when throttle is added.

Yes filters and oil for the simple HST fix. Art's response was posted while I was writing mine. MarkL commented that he must have been dozing over on another thread. Same must have been true for me too. ....

Tom, another thing but I don't think it is your problem. Many people try to move the speed set lever while there foot is on the brake. This will bend the linkages and cause the tractor normally to back up faster than it should and have little in forward. I normally recommend that the oil and filter gets changed evry two years at a minimum on the hydro. More than that and the condinsation on the small capacity will get the best of them. ....

Thanks for your collective wisdom, much appreciated. Do you have to use the expensive Cub cadet tranmission fluid. If not what can be used? ....

The cadet oil is not that expensive. You might try the case-ih hytan. It is a 10 weight base so becareful of aftermarket hyraulic oils. ....

Follow up To Cub Cadet Not Moving Forward:

Excuse my lack of accurate mechanical description but a guy I ain't :-)_

The throttle was connected to a shaft leading to the engine that had two screws. One had sheared off so moving the throttle only caused the shaft to pivot and therefore the tractor wouldn't move. My husband punched a screw in there and all is well.

This Cub will be for sale at the end of the winter. We want to keep it over the winter for it's excellent snowthrower that does our 600 foot driveway (with various litle driveways)in less than an hour. We now have a Kubota compact tractor which we plan on purchasing a snowblower for next year. We needed more umph for other jobs around the farm and thus bought the Kubota ....
